Broken Arrow ISD / Sequoyah Middle School
Request
As part of the expansion and renovation of Sequoyah Middle School in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, the Broken Arrow ISD required a storm shelter to ensure the safety of students and staff during tornadoes and severe weather events. The shelter needed to be large enough to house the entire school population and be easily accessible during emergencies.
Solution
Speed Fab Crete designed, fabricated, and installed an ICC 500 storm shelter space that also served as the school’s new choir and band facility. From a structural standpoint, its precast members consisted of columns, inverted ‘T’ beams, wall panels, and double tees. From an architectural standpoint, the exterior wall panels were integrally colored with a 5-module form liner that created a semi-random ‘horizontal plank’ appearance.
Results
Sequoyah Middle School’s storm shelter was completed successfully, providing a vital safety feature for the school district. It has the capacity to protect all students and staff during severe weather events, ensuring their safety and security. The project was completed on schedule and has been well received by the school community for its effective design and implementation.
